Basketball action in the Black Friday Classic to date includes an exciting win by the Thunder Mountain High School team over the Juneau-Douglas High School squad 35-34.
According to Falcons coach Tanya Nizich the teams were exchanging basket for basket all the way to the final seconds of the game.
This could bode well for the Falcons’ hoop season this year and will make those cross-town matches even more intriguing. The Falcons also dropped a game to Fairbanks 58-23, but they didn’t put their heads down at all.
Other women’s action saw Rendezvous whip Whitehorse 42-25 and Nizich Dental nip Fairbanks 52-51. Fairbanks’ Sheena Brown tallied 27 points in the loss.
In men’s action Gustavus fell to Haines 50-30 as Tyler Healy dropped 18 points on our Juneau neighbors.
The Tropics topped State Farm/First Bank 65-60 behind 21 from Sean Bavard. Shane Young had 31 and Alex Heumann 15 for the banksters.
Huna also took it to Gustavus 60-30.
Haines had a closer game against Random Collision as a three pointer at the buzzer fell short to let the Merchants escape with their second win 43-40.
State Farm/First Bank stopped the powerful Southeast Hoopers 65-56 as Heumann scored 23 and Shane Young added 19.
Saturday’s action featured men’s bracket play and saw State Farm/First Bank top the combined TMHS/JDHS team 68-60. Heumann dropped 27 for State Farm and Austin Shoemaker led the high school team with 14.
Haines nipped the Tropics 53-50. Healy led Haines with 21 points. The Tropics’ Reese Saviers had 14 and Tony Tompkins 12.
Huna topped Gustavus 69- 36 behind 16 points from David Lindoff. Josh Cozby led Gustavus with 14. The Southeast Hoopers blasted Random Collision 75 -33 and Haines topped State Farm 56-42. The Southeast Hoopers then bested Huna 59-47. Nate Pettis kept Huna in the game by scoring 9 points near the end. Freddy Hamilton and Jeb Phillips put up 15 for the victors and James Wilson added 15 for the vanquished. The TMHS/JDHS topped the Tropics 39-29 and Random Collision 58 got a scare from winless Gustavus 58-57.
On the women’s side Fairbanks chilled Whitehorse 66-24 and Nizich Dental put a hurting on the JDHS girls 64-25. Late Saturday games included
Whitehorse vs. JDHS, Rendezvous vs. TMHS, Whitehorse vs. Nizich Dental, and Rendezvous vs. Fairbanks.
Semifinal and final action begins today at 8 a.m. and runs through 8 p.m.
