Thorne Bay wrestling.
The Thorne Bay Wolverines’ wrestlers walked away with the Region 5 1A – 2A Team Championship two weeks ago in Sitka. It came down to the final individual championship between Anthony Minnillo and a wrestler from Pelican. Pelican was ahead by 4 points. Anthony won that match with a 19 to 5 point lead to take first place in the 160 weight class, earn 4 team points, and solidify his place at the State wrestling tournament in Nikiski this weekend. This tied the team points between Pelican and Thorne Bay. Since Anthony won by more than 5 points, the Wolverines earned an additional point to put Thorne Bay ahead by 1 point to win the team championship.
In addition to Anthony’s victory, Quinn Slayton finished 3rd at the Regional Tournament – earning him a place at the State Wrestling Tournament, Luther Jenson finished 5th, and Alex Slayton finished 6th. Also representing Thorne Bay with pride at the Regional Tournament were Tru Tripple and Felton Rusher. All wreslters contributed to earn the Team Championship. Way to go Wolverines!!!
