‘Tis the season for soccer fans and players to get some winter thrills on the pitch as the 19th Annual Holiday Cup soccer tournament began on Sunday.

 

According to organizer Leslie Houston the event typically features over 30 teams.

The tournament began with Paul Dillon, a senior partner at the Law Offices of Dillon and Findley, wanted to provide a fun activity for Juneau’s youths while exposing them to competitive indoor soccer. Paul and his young children along with the help from others and the sponsorship of his Law Firm, launched what is now the 1st Annual Juneau-Douglas Holiday Cup. The games were held in various school gyms around Juneau, moving to the Field House a few years ago.

Over 150 players are participating this year in six divisions:

Division 1 E is Elementary, Ages 9 thru 5th Grade and has three teams. They will run double round robin leading into single-elimination games.

Division 2 MS is Middle School, Grades 6 thru 8 and has five teams. They will run single round robin leading into single-elimination games.

Division 3 J is Junior Division, Grade 9 thru Age 16 and has three teams. They will run double round robin leading into single-elimination games.

Division 4 S is Senior Divison, Ages 17 thru 20 and has five teams. They will run single round robin leading into single-elimination games.

Division 5 M is Masters Division, Ages 21 and Up and has nine teams. They will run single round robin leading into single-elimination games.

Division 6 C is Classics Division, Ages 35 and Up (over 35 can play in either Masters or Classics) and has four teams. They will run double round robin leading into single-elimination games.

Following the end of the round robin, teams are seeded and brackets are posted and single elimination games begin after Christmas.

A variety of former Crimson Bears and future Falcons and Crimson Bears are on the pitch so fans can catch up, socialize and have some good cheer. Daily game scores are available at www.juneau-douglasholidaycup.com
