Former pros to instruct at JDIA hockey clinic next week

The Juneau-Douglas Ice Association players are going to have more than a mid-season refresher course during their specialized hockey skills development clinic beginning Tuesday.

In cooperation with Treadwell Ice Arena and the City and borough of Juneau the JDIA will have two former top professional skaters on the ice.

Steve MacSwain and Kimbi Daniels will conduct the development clinic for JDIA players as well as show their own skating skills in the rink.

MacSwain has been both an assistant and head coach of teams in the USA, Canada and in Europe during his professional career. Most recently he was the Head Coach of the Alaska Aces of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and continues to promote the sport of hockey in Anchorage, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and now Juneau.

Daniels has played professional hockey for 20 seasons including two as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League. He was known for his physical offensive play and holds numerous Western Hockey League, International Hockey League, and East Coast Hockey League scoring records including most goals in a single game (7) and scoring 400 points as a member of the Alaska Aces.

According to JDIA president Dennis Weston the first one-hour skills development clinic will be for the Mites through PeeWee players. Coaches MacSwain and Daniels will cover skating, passing, stick handling and shooting skills with an emphasis on improving player strength and balance on the ice.

The second hour will be for the Bantam and Midget players covering how to read and react to the current game of hockey. Emphasis will be placed on puck control, passing, and the role physical checking plays in today’s fast paced games and the importance of timing and proper execution. Also covered will be some of the newer on ice strategies being used in professional and junior hockey leagues.

Coaches MacSwain and Daniels have agreed to provide coaching for coaches as well.

The cost for JDIA players to attend this mid season clinic is $100 and preregistration should be made by contacting JDIA for planning purposes. The specific times of the sessions will be announced as soon as possible and well in advance of the late December dates.

Weston advises that the skills development sessions are designed to be a low stress, fast paced, fun preparation for the second half of the JDIA hockey season. All players are encouraged to arrive early, introduce themselves to Coach MacSwain and Daniels and spend a few extra minutes after the sessions with two players and coaches who bring a wealth of international hockey experience to our community.

Parents and fans of players attending are encouraged to check out the clinic sessions as watch as local skating and coaching talenst interact with the professional guidance of MacSwain and Daniels on the ice.
