Falcons’ cagers drop opening games of Kodiak Invitational

The Thunder Mountain High School varsity basketball teams dropped their opening games in the 45th Annual Joe Floyd/ERA Aviation Winter Classic Basketball Tournament at Kodiak on Thursday.

The TMHS boys lost a tight game to the Kodiak Bears 53-42. Leading scorer for the Falcons was 6-foot-1 sophomore guard Matt Seymour with 19 points.

According to coach John Blasco the Falcons improved significantly from their last outing in Anchorage and competed well against a powerful Bears team.

The boys play the Ketchikan Kings today at 3:45 p.m. and the Cordova Wolverines on Saturday at 2:15 p.m.

The Falcons’ girls also dropped a close game to the Kodiak girls, 37-29. The Falcons’ leading scorer was 5-foot-7 junior forward Jonelle Staveland with 16 points. Michaela Demmert added five, Emily Winters four, Ashley Young three and Shale Kibby one.

According to coach Tanya Nizich both teams had a slow start and the Bears led 12-11 at the half. The pace picked up in the second half but high-percentage shots weren’t falling for either team and the score was 18-17 Kodiak starting the final period.

The girls play Cordova today at 2 p.m. and the Klawock Chieftains on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
