A spirited comeback run by the Thunder Mountain Falcons boys’ basketball team fell just short on Friday night against the Chugiak Mustangs.
Matt Seymour hit six of his 13 points in a dramatic fourth quarter surge that nearly saw the Falcons climb out of a 50-35 deficit with under two minutes remaining.
Ben Jahn also tallied 13 points as he attacked the bigger Mustangs in the first period to give the Falcons a 10-9 lead.
The Mustangs had a hot shooting second period as Payton Fullmer and Ryan Harris hit three straight shots from beyond the arch and opened a 21-12 second quarter surge. The Falcons closed to within 26-19 at the half.
Seymour, Tupou and Jahn opened the third period by bringing the ball to the net and cutting the lead down to 30-25. The Falcons couldn’t get closer than five for the remainder of the game.
Josh Tupou, Sam Jahn, and Avery Stewart added four points for the Falcons, Ty Gruessendorf three, and Coltin Lanz two.
Marquiz Spearman lead the Mustangs with 18 points, Steven Puterbaugh and Skylar Fullmer seven apiece, Harris and P. Fullmer five each, Kenny Peques four, Matt Oldenkamp and Wade Snell two apiece.
Thunder Mountain hit 7-18 at the charity stripe, Chugiak went 4-13.
The Falcons play at Mt. Edgecumbe tonight and Saturday night. Tonight’s game will be broadcast on KINY 800 AM at 7:30.
