Juneau Roller Girls host Yukon team

Posted: February 17, 2012 - 1:07am

An international, and physical, brouhaha is about to be displayed at Centennial Hall on Saturday night as the Juneau Roller Girls host their Canadian neighbors, the Yukon Roller Girls.

The JRG are looking for redemption after a lopsided loss to the Rage City (Anchorage) Roller Girls’ league champions, the Dirty Polli’s, in January. The score of 283-41 looks a lot worse than it really was according to JRG skaters.

“One of the things that really stood out in our Anchorage bout is that while we were a little bit behind in the strategic areas, we do have the strength and speed to play,” JRG Julie Sanbei, aka Just Julie, said. “We are just a little green. We don’t want Juneau to get the impression we don’t know what we are doing. We just played an undefeated team up there. Juneau and Yukon will be evenly matched.”

Added Kim Glasow, aka Catapult Kim, ““We knew we were going to get slaughtered, they had been around a long time and are one of the most competitive teams in the North West. We figured it would be a great learning experience and it was.”

Saturday’s but will be between two evenly matched squads as Yukon is approaching their second anniversary and has had two sanctioned bouts, both wins. The YRG defeated the Edmonton Oil City Derby Girls’ rookie team 187-127 at Edmonton in January 2011, and hosted the Fairbanks Rollergirls in the September Klondike Klash that resulted in a 159-104 YRG win.

“We are really looking forward to coming out, or is it down, I am not sure really what direction it is, I guess it is down and out,” Katherine Stewart, aka Wilder Than Her, said. “I think what we are looking to do is play some good roller derby and put on a good bout for the fans in Juneau and mingle about after. Ultimately, of course, we would like to roll away with a win.”

The Juneau girls learned how to better play a slow game in the Anchorage loss.

“We are just all about going fast,” Glasow said. “We didn’t know what to do in Anchorage when they went slow and we got a lot of penalties. Everyone is pretty positive and excited for Saturday no matter the outcome. We are definitely planning on winning.”

The JRG will be a mixture of Juneau’s Raven Lunatics and KilKats. Many of the Juneau rollers have skated with Yukon rollers at a boot camp in Anchorage so they are familiar with the talent each other will face.

“We are going to give one hundred percent so Juneau stays excited about roller derby,” Sanbei said. “We are pretty pumped. It will be an amazing match. Juneau will get to see our travel team for the first time. We are taking the most enthusiastic derby girls from the Raven Lunatics and the KilKats and putting them on the track together, so that is exciting.”

Sanbei, the Raven Lunatics captain, and derby wife Glasow, captain of the KilKats, will be together on the same side for the first time. A “derby wife” is someone who encourages and challenges another in his or her derby career.

“I really want the Raven Lunatics on our travel team to be able to feel what winning feels like,” Glasow said. “I want them to feel that because it feels nice.”

Said Sanbei, “It is really exciting to be able to skate with Kim instead of against Kim. Juneau is going to see something they have never seen on the track before. The team is so excited to play a team that we do not know. This is pulling off the familiarity and we have to rely on our skill.”

The Juneau Roller Girls roster will include:

Kim Glasow (Catapult Kim 3), Julie Sanbei (Just Julie 11), Amanda Triplett (Titty Tripper 99), Sue Watt (Tuffy Bragoon cat5), Tanya Cavanaugh (TanYoHyde 15), Katie White (Skatie Brite 22), Olivia Barrow (Peach Clobber OB1), Kim Champney (Kimbustible b4u), Sarah Arntson (Juneau UWantSome 907), Julie Peters (EmPending Doom 7), Kim Hort (Carheartless 40), April Rebert (April Mayhem 420), Carol Mahara (Feral Carol 30), Jeanne Crochet (Jean Claude Hot Damn 10mg), Bench coaches are Lauren Brooks (Conquistawhore 151) and Sabrina Bracher (VertaBracher 666).

The Yukon team includes: Ashley Fisher (Arctic Fox 44), Holy Smith (Bacon Bergina 15%), Lindsay Agar (Bonanza Babe 79), Jennifer Duncombe (Lady Cuntessa 88), Jenna Collee (MdevilE 69), Julie Enman (Metallicunt 666), Kyla Litke-Wirth (Roberta Bondage 24), Shauna Jones (Ruff Tuff Creampuff 13), Kathleen MacDonald (Scabby Knees McGee 4), Amil Dupuis-Rossi (The Fighting Mongoose 14), Emma Stinson (Madawaska), Denise Schneider (Triple D 5), Katherine Stewart (Wilder Than Her), Heather Wanamaker (Faye Tality), bench coach Kyla Johnston (Styx and Stones 3006), refs Sarah Gallagher (Profanity Jane) and Stephanie Hammond (soupmix 250ml).

“We are used to traveling a long distance to play,” Stewart said. “I think we will be all right. We have just attended the Blood And Guts boot camp in Abbotsville (B.C.) and have some new things we are excited to try out. I think it will be a good time.”

Doors open at Centennial Hall at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and the bout begins at 7. Thirty-five tickets will be available at the door. The pre-bout sales have listed a full house of spectators; the additional tickets are from traveling fans not being able to attend. Fans must be 21 or with a guardian to attend. There is a no-host bar provided by the Rendezvous. 5% of proceeds go to a local charity (which charity is yet to be determined). The bout will be broadcast live on 360north.org <http://360north.org> as well as on KXLL. It will also be aired on 360 North on Feb. 25th at 8pm. The next scheduled bout is against Fairbanks (in Fairbanks) on May 19th.
