Monday Basketball Roundup: Junior Male and Female Squads Both Fall

WHITEHORSE, Yukon – Alaska opened basketball play at the 2012 Arctic Winter Games on Monday with losses in both the junior male and female divisions. The males fell 80-55 to the Yukon, while the females lost a tough 59-54 game to the Northwest Territories.

Yukon used bursts of 20-6 and 34-16 in the second and third quarters to run away with an 80-55 win against Alaska at F.H. Collins Secondary School.

Team Yukon was paced by Brian Prenoslo, who scored a game-high 24 points as he hit eight free throws and a pair of threes. Other double-figure scorers included Peter Hansen and Paul Hermosa, who tallied 13 and 10 points respectively.

For Alaska, Allen Pangelinan and Konrad Koscik tied for a team-high 14 points each, while Rocky Vasai added eight points.

Alaska led 20-17 after the first quarter, but went flat in the second, scoring just six points to trail 37-26 at halftime. Yukon nearly doubled its score in the third quarter alone, with 34 points to open up the game and cruise to the win
