WHITEHORSE, Yukon – Alaska got a win and tie out of the junior female hockey team while the bantam males went 0-2 and the midget males lost in their only outing. All games were played at either Canada Games Centre or Takhini Arena in Whitehorse.
Junior Female: Alaska 4, Alberta North 4
Alaska and Alberta North had a back and forth contest, but trailing by one in the third, Alaska’s Zahn Thompson scored the equalizer with 5:57 remaining to allow Alaska to tie Alberta North 4-4 Tuesday morning at the Canada Games Centre. Aside from Thompson, Alaska got a pair of first-period goals from Jamie Rall, who was named the team’s MVP, and one tally in the second from Melanie Bartenstein.
Junior Female: Alaska 9, Northwest Territories 0
In the nightcap, Alaska throttled Northwest Territories by a score of 9-0 at the Canada Games Centre. Zahn Thompson was credited with the game-winning goal as she scored off the opening faceoff just nine seconds into the first period. Other top contributors included Marisa Ketterman (2 goals, assist), Brittany Stahle (2 goals, assist) and Jamie Rall (goal, 2 assists). Madi Davis garnered MVP honors following the game after she finished with an assist.
Bantam Male: Alberta North 3, Alaska 2
Alberta North scored three goals in the final 5:36 and rallied to defeat Alaska 3-2 on Tuesday morning at Takhini Arena. Alaska led 2-0 after getting a first period tally from Stanley Skorulski and a second period score from Arthur Edgren. Alberta North ended the scoreless streak with 5:36 to play when Geoff Gordon found the net. With just under four to play, Kyle Craddock scored the game’s equalizer, but he wasn’t done yet as he fired the game-winner with 56 ticks to go in regulation.
Bantam Male: Northwest Territories 3, Alaska 1
Northwest Territories scored a pair of first-period goals and added some insurance with a late tally in the third period to down Alaska 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Takhini Arena. Brandon Wallis recorded both of NWT’s scores in the first to give it a 2-0 lead. Alaska cut the deficit in half when Grant Ainsworth scored Alaska’s lone goal 20 seconds into the second. The score stayed idle until Curtis German fired an unassisted goal to provide a cushion.
Midget Male: Northwest Territories 6, Alaska 4
Cody Villebrun scored a hat trick to lead the Northwest Territories to a 6-4 win against Alaska on Tuesday at Takhini Arena. Villebrun opened the scoring with a pair of goals 2:26 apart to give NWT a 2-0 lead with 4:19 to play in the first and the lead went to 3-0 after Jeffry Groenheyde found the net. Alaska answered with goals by Dalton Buness and Bradley Hudson only four seconds apart to trim the deficit to 3-2 after one. NWT added two goals in the second and an insurance tally in the third to walk out victorious. Other Alaska goal scorers were Jake Eubank and William Harren.
