The Lew Brooks Memorial Tennis Tournament was held at the Alaska Club March 1 - 4. The event drew 47 participants who played in honor of former tennis player Lew Brooks who lost his battle to pancreatic cancer. In the Women’s division it was a battle of the ages and undefeated teams,as Beatrice Franklin and Sarajean Fujioka fended off up and comers, Sami Good & Erica Hurtte, 6-1, 6-2. Franklin/Fujioka were crowned champions with a 3-0 record. In the Mixed A division, veterans Bev and Kurt Smith defeated Pele Arthur & Fred Tolbert to complete a perfect 3-0. In the Mixed Open division, George Crowder and Anne Kincheloe prevailed in three sets over Ron Hohman & Mona Yarnall 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) to win the thriller. In the Men’s A division, it was a knock down drag out match, as Phao Nyugen and Mike Rose prevailed over high school superstars, Johnny Joyce and Matt Vandor in a three-set thriller. 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5. In the Men’s Open division, veterans George Crowder and Ron Hohman outlasted the younger competition to prevail as champions.
