The JDHS Crimson Bears cheer and stunt team pose with their first place awards at the state cheer competitions on Tuesday.

A good start

The 2012 Alaska Scholastic Activities Association’s March Madness Alaska is barely under way and our Capital City kids are kicking, um, well basically everything. The Juneau-Douglas High School Cheer and Stunt Team added to their Region V first place honor by winning the State Cheerleading Competition held at South Anchorage High School on Tuesday.

With 23 schools competing, the Crimson Bears took first place in the co-ed large school division and first place in the timeout cheer category. Starting today they will be on the sidelines, on the court and in the stands helping the JDHS boys and girls in their games at Anchorage’s Sullivan Arena.

The Crimson Bears boys open at 8 a.m. today against the Service Cougars and the girls play at 8:30 p.m. against the Dimond Lynx.

Now to turn away from hair-raising performances… Thunder Mountain football coach Bill Byouer and a possible player or two will be shaving off their locks Saturday at the St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser at T.K. Maguires in the Prospector Hotel beginning at 4 p.m. The event helps fund childhood cancer research and has been organized by the Juneau Firefighters for four years.

In Seattle, Talisa Rhea and the Seattle University Redhawks are hosting the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. It is the first Division I postseason appearance in school history and the first for any Seattle U team since the DI reclassification process in 2008. Rhea and teammate Kacie Sowell were named to the Independent Women’s Basketball First Team All-Conference. The Redhawks play the University of North Dakota at 7 p.m. today at the SU’s Connolly Center.
