Haines opened their Gold Medal “B” bracket tournament with a resounding 74-59 win over Kake on Sunday at the Juneau-Douglas High School gymnasium behind the inside play of Tyler Swinton and Ben Egolf.
Swinton tallied 21 points and Egolf 18 as the taller Haines team used a 24-13 rebound advantage to open a 42-26 halftime advantage.
Kake tried to make a run in the second half, closing to within 10 points, 57-47 with half the stanza remaining but Swinton scored the next four points at the free throw line to stop the momentum. Haines hit 24-37 at the charity stripe for the game, Kake hit just 5-10.
Tracy Jackson scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the second half to keep Kake within striking distance, including an eight-point deficit at 63-55 with 5:33 remaining but the foul disparity took its toll. James Hart hit two free throws and Egolf four in a row to take control of the contest.
Tyler Healy added 12 Points for Haines, Harry Reitze five, Jesse McGraw, Ryan Olson and Hart four each, Michael Ganey, Chris Dixon and Norman Zura two each.
Shea Jackson and Adam Dolan added eight points apiece for Kake, Lance Doake seven, Brandon Jackson six, Sean Jackson five, Shane Padgett four, Dion Jackson three and Trevor Rostad two.
Haines advances to play Angoon in a winners bracket game today at 3:30 p.m. while Kake plays Klukwan in a tournament elimination game Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
