Juneau-Douglas High School grad (2010) Nick Rutecki, now completing his sophomore season at the University of Wyoming, was recently named to the second team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) for the 200-medley relay, the 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and the 50 freestyle. The Cowboys finished in third place at the MPSF championships in Los Angeles with 556 team points after being in first position for the first two days of the competitions. BYU won with 625 and UNLV was second with 603.

Rutecki had a strong freshman year. According to the Cowboys website he was part of the fourth-place 200 medley relay team; placed 15th in the 100 fly at the Mountain West championships and won the 100 fly at the Nebraska-North Dakota triangular.

According to an interview with Alaska Swimming LLC, Rutecki states his strongest event is the 50 free, an event that he took into the top eight of finals at the MPSF. He is also best at the 50 fly portion of the 200 medley relay and had the second fastest time in the Cowboy’s conference.

Rutecki states he is a swim sprinter. His events require the ability to hold a breath for a long period and he does not breathe at all in the 50 free.

Rutecki stated he was extremely exited with the MPSF championships because the Cowboys nearly won with just 14 swimmers.

Rutecki said his highlight of this season was bettering his 50 free time for the first time since my his junior year at JDHS. He also swam on two relays that are new U of W school records.

Rutecki is one of three Alaskans on the U of W swim/dive team (Jeff Frey of Wasilla, Dalton Haas of Anchorage, and Ryan O’Leary of Seward) and is proud of the 907 area code.

“We always brag about how great Alaska is,” Rutecki is quoted. “It is really fun being on a team with so many Alaskan’s. We are all so young too, and only getting better. By the end of our carriers we will probably be going to the NCAA’s on relays and maybe individually as well.”

Rutecki is the son of Tom and Mary Rutecki and has two siblings, Jenna and Sam. Nick is majoring in engineering at the University of Wyoming.
