The Juneau Ski Club’s Sally Thompson and Ronan Davies led a group of 11 club racers at the recent U.S. Ski And Snowboard Association 2012 State Championships at Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood. The U12 State Championships are a gathering of the best 9-12 year olds in the state, some of which are from Juneau.

Thompson finished in 4th place in the J5 Women Overall standings and Davies finished in 3rd place overall in the J4 Men.

According to JSC coach Randy Bates the trip was awesome.

“It was many of our athletes first experience skiing outside of Juneau let along in a race series at another mountain and in a race with nearly 100 kids of their own age,” Bates said. “The kids skied really well, gained some great experience, made some valuable friendships, and represented the Juneau Ski Club well on and off the race courses.

Sunday Slalom JSC Men Results: James Burger – 10th place, J5; Kaelin Quigley – 12th place, J5; Ronan Davies – 4th place, J4.

Others that participated but are not listed were either disqualified in a run or did not finish a run.

“Throughout the ski season we have seen lots of progress in the athletes’ skiing technique and race course tactics,” Bates commented. “Coach Mike Satre, myself, and the attending parents were excited to see them apply the techniques and tactics to the races. Each of the athletes should be proud of their effort, regardless of their finish or placement. The Alyeska Ski Club put together a great race series.”

The Juneau Ski Club will have a home hill advantage on Eaglecrest Ski Area next season, as they will be hosting the U12 2013 State Championships.
