Billed as the King Salmon Slamming Showdown, the King of the Hill Showdown, or the Save Our Tournament Showdown, two local adult hockey teams will battle in a best-of-three series for town bragging rights at Treadwell Ice Arena. First game action is tonight at 7:45 p.m., game two is Saturday at 5:15 p.m., and if needed a game three will be played on Sunday at 2:45 p.m.
“Whatever gets people in the seats showdown,” JDHS assistant coach Matt Boline said. “We are trying to get the spirit of the game out there and show that people play for the love of the sport.”
The King Salmon Tournament usually scheduled for April had been organized to be bigger than before with proceeds going to disadvantaged youth that play hockey. However, teams began to cancel from both an “A” and “B” division and the tournament has been rescheduled for October.
A number of players were too excited to not play so two teams were selected to battle it out for local bragging rights that will last through the summer until the chill of October brings the King Salmon charity hockey tournament back to the ice.
Past JDHS standouts Chris Budbill, Andrew Ainsworth, Zander Hoke and Garret Cheeseman will be on the ice tonight on the Northern Lights roster with local stars Jim Sheehan and Ben Liallier. Rounding out the NL’s are Alec Venechuk, JDHS assistant coach Matt Boline, Wayne Zigarlick, Flip Pryor, Evan St. Pierre, and Justin Fantasia.
Island Pub will get current JDHS blue liner Kevin Zigarlick and veterans Dan Teske and Chris Siddon, and visiting all-stars Nick Arnold, Justin Smith and Kirk Zerkel. IP will also feature Aaron Jacobs, Mark Sams, TJ Jones, Rich Morris, JDHS head coach Dave McKenna, Matt Foss, Carl Foss, and Thomas McKenzie.
