All smiles for Falcons' Hall during Capital City Invite

Juneau-Douglas, Thunder Mountain and Haines top the field

TMHS' Maddie Hall leads the 1,600 meter field during Saturdays Capital City Invitational Track & Field meet at Falcons Field.

Thunder Mountain freshman Maddie Hall was all smiles as she ran. And she has something to smile about.

It is not her wins in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs this weekend at the Capital City Invitational track and field meet at Falcons Field. It is not setting a few personal records or accounting for 30 team points.

Even though she did those things on Saturday, that smile is something else.

“It’s a secret,” Hall said on Saturday. “I do like running. Just new goals to make and new times to reach.”

Some of those goals and times helped the Falcons stay in the hunt for a region title.

The Falcons girls finished third with 102 points, behind first-place Juneau-Douglas’ 170 and Haines’ 106. Petersburg had 93.5, Sitka 65, Ketchikan 41.5, Yakutat 31, and Gustavus 1.

The Falcons’ boys won with 145 team points, with JDHS second at 122, Haines third with 109, Ketchikan 99, Sitka 70, Petersburg 36, Yakutat 9 and Gustavus 5.

“I was particularly proud of how our teams conducted themselves this weekend, competitively and sportsmanship wise,” TMHS coach Scott May said. “There were many great and close races, with the outcome of the meet in question up to the end. We made some mistakes, and will use them as teaching tools to move forward. Our relay exchanges have improved, but still have a long way to go. We are looking forward to one last test in Haines this coming weekend, before we start our final preparations for the Region Championships.”

The Falcons girls had seven PR’s and five new school records. The Falcons boys set three school records and 32 personal records, including Khalil English breaking his PR in the 1,600 into the 4:30’s and being named Athlete Of The Meet by TMHS coaches.

As for freshman Maddie Hall, her goal is to get a 5:45 second mile and help the Falcons improve.

“I would like to see our team continue to do what it is doing,” Hall said. “They are doing really nice. And it is nice to see Thunder Mountain doing so well in the sport.”

The Falcons track success is definitely not a secret... but it is something to smile about.
