The Thunder Mountain High School Falcons softball program took a step forward last weekend as the TMHS Falcon softball squad played tight games against some of the state’s best 3A and 4A competition. The highlight of the Falcon’s weekend was Friday’s 11-5 win over Fairbanks’ Lathrop High School. Senior third baseman Devyn Kubley paced the Falcons 11-hit attack, going 3 for 3 with 4 RBI’s. Junior outfielder Casey Hansen also had 4 RBI’s, three of them coming when she unloaded the bases with an opposite field triple during the Falcon’s 5-run second inning. Freshman Emma Bullock pitched a complete game, securing the Falcons first win of the 2012 campaign.
The Falcons played five straight games on Saturday, all against squads that competed in the ASAA state softball championships at the conclusion of the 2011 season. The Falcons dropped all five contests, but the tight games against stiff competition indicated that the Falcons will be a factor in the upcoming Southeast Conference season.
Southeast Conference play begins next weekend in Sitka and TMHS will play two games each against conference foes Sitka and Ketchikan. Although they came up short during the weekend, it’s clear the Falcons are headed in the right direction. Ketchikan coach Scott Smith commented on what he saw in the Falcons performance during the weekend by saying, “They are becoming dangerous.”
