The rust and cobwebs from local adult softball gear (and local adults) will begin to fall away as the 2nd Annual Lynn Cox Memorial “Wood Bat” softball tournament begins today at Dimond Park.
The tournament originated approximately 30 years ago with the idea of giving the umpires and players a pre-season weekend to get their games right before the official adult leagues begin. Official Juneau Softball Association softball league action begins on Monday.
Over the years the tournament took on the name “Lynn Cox Memorial” in honor of Juneau Douglas Officials Association umpire Lynn Cox who called softball action in Juneau for approximately 20 years. Cox passed away in the late 90’s.
The tournament used to be a one-pitch tournament, meaning batters got the one chance to swing or duck before being called out or taking a base or two.
Recently the tournament has become a “wood bat” only tournament. Wood bats are more forgiving to pitchers. Typical softball league metal, aluminum, composite and multi-walled bats allow for more balls to find refuge over the outfield fences whereas wood bats make for a more fan-watchable game of defensive skills... and a few more bruises and pulled muscles.
This year’s tournament will feature a men’s and women’s division but no coed division as the number of teams has outgrown the amount of field space. The coed portion of the tournament is scheduled to be played on May 12-13.
“Wood Bat” Tourney action begins Friday at 6 p.m. with round robin action that continues into Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. Teams will then be positioned in a double-elimination format bracket Saturday thru Sunday. Sunday action begins at 9 a.m. and should have division champions crowned by 2 p.m. Fans should be safe and arrive before 11:45 a.m. if they want to see the championship action.
