JDHS soccer girls top Kayhi 3-0 on senior night

12 classmates on the field for the first time this season

The emotions of senior night for the Juneau-Douglas High School girl’s soccer team were already running high as each received flowers and stood on the Adair Kennedy soccer pitch with their parents.

Then coach Matt Dusenberry held up his cell phone with a call from senior Dorothy Brent.

Brent was diagnosed with cancer early this year and could not play soccer, nor attend any games due to ongoing chemotherapy in Seattle.

As the players gathered around him, he instead pointed back down the pitch and Brent, who had been hiding in athletic director Sandi Wagner’s car, came running toward them.

The 2012 Crimson Bears girl’s soccer team was now complete for the first time all season.

“To be here and see them play means everything to me,” Brent said. “I can’t express how I feel right now.”

The JDHS senior soccer girls, as they were announced on Friday night, were:

Solana Ashe, with her mom Margie Ramos. Solana will be attending Northern Arizona University next year.

Cassidy Davenport with her dad Jim Davenport and her mom Shannon and Clay Kent. Cassidy will be attending Whitworth University next year.

Kiera Clark with her parents Denise and Zane Clark. Kiera will be attending Brigham Young University.

Krista Thomson with her parents Margie and David Thomson. Krista will be studying nursing at Seattle University.

Anna Gregovich with her parents Laura and Lars Gregovich. Anna will be going to Western Washington University.

Kit Cunningham with her mom Kate Savage and her dad Chris Cunningham. Kit will be taking a gap year and will be traveling.

Katie Strehler with her mom Peggy Murphy and her dad Reto Strehler. Katie will be studying bioengineering at the University of Washington.

Marlena Sloss with her parents Jeff and Susan Sloss. Marlena will be attending Whitman College.

Sid Browning with her parents Shelagh Sands and Greg Browning. Sid will be going to Pomona College.

Chrish Newell with her dad John Newell. Chrish will be attending the Oregon Institute of Technology.

Rebekah Badilla with her parents Doug and Sue Badilla. Bekah will be attending Azusa Pacific University in the fall.

Dorothy’s mother Trinie Kelly was present.

Announced over the Adair Kennedy intercom was this message, “Dorothy always kept things positive and we have greatly missed her presence on and off the field. We want to thank all of the seniors for making it a great soccer season and we wish you the best for next year. We will miss all of you! And as Dorothy would say, “foul discreetly!”

The 12 seniors, wearing retro uniforms, served as game captains and Dorothy called the coin flip, choosing to have the Crimson Bears offense charging away from the bench the first half and thus being able to enjoy her teammates skills front row in the second.

The Crimson Bears, however, put the games final tally on the scoreboard in the first half.

Kiera Clark scored the game’s first goal in the opening minutes as the Crimson Bears touched a corner kick and Solana Ashe dribbled it in and fired a shot that rebounded out to Clark. Clark kneed the shot past multiple players into the net.

Chrish Newell made it 2-0 from 20 yards out with a direct shot that overpowered the Kayhi keeper.

Rebekka Ord scored the third and final goal on a move in the open field, cutting the ball around a defender and putting a shot over the goalies head into the netting.

Bundled against the weather, huddled on the bench under the team tent, the Crimson Bears laughed, loved and played like the game would last forever.

When the game ended, when the opponents had been acknowledged, the Crimson Bears awarded their player-of-the-game Hard Hat to Solana Ashe.

Sitting on Brent’s lap, with seniors cuddled in close, Ashe placed the hat on Dorothy’s head.

The JDHS Crimson Bears girl’s soccer team played their last season home game as a complete team.
