For the first time in the 20 year history of the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay, the event has maxed out at the early registration deadline. The limit of 1200 participants was reached just as the early registration deadline closed on Friday night. A record 278 teams have registered.
The cool and windy weather has not been a motivator for riders to register early. The main factor must be that many riders want to take part in the 20th running of the very successful international event. Setting a limit of 95 teams for the 8 person category may also create a rush before the early deadline.
The limit on riders was set several years ago as a way to manage road safety. Last year was the first time that the number of 8-person teams was set at 95. The combination of team support, rider logistics, checkpoint volunteers and tourists creates a lot of vehicle traffic on the Haines highway. Limiting the number of participants ensures that there will be a manageable number of vehicles.
Riders who waited until the last minute and missed registering their teams may still have a chance to participate. They should check the KCIBR website frequently and go to the Forums page to look for teams that are wanting to cancel or may be looking for extra riders. The website address is www.kcibr.org.
Of the 278 teams registered, there are 39 solos, 54 2-person, 90 4-person and 95 8-person teams. The 2’s and 4’s have increased significantly over last year and solo riders are down. The majority of teams are mixed, and there are about 60 men’s and 50 women’s teams.
The 20th running of the event is set for June 16. For more information contact Mike Gladish at 688-4582 or Mike Kramer at 633-3465.
