The Juneau Freewheelers Race In The Ran kicked off with exquisite conditions according to race director Rob: 42 degrees, 20mph winds and steady rain.
Every racer accrued serious hard-man and hard-woman status for Gore-Tex’ing up and doing the deed in this classic Southeast Soaker that brought new meaning to the phrase “True Grit”
The Sport Class race results of 21.0 miles:
1. Alysia Jones, 1 hour 13 minutes and 23
seconds; 2. Cathy Tide, 1:21:43; and 3. Alicia Bishop, 1:26:03.
All the Sport riders finished without getting caught by the Race Class. According to race directors Alicia Bishop used a very solid effort to stay ahead of John
Bursell in the last quarter mile to the line.
The Race Class results for the 30.2 miles
1. John Bursell, 1:27:06; 2. Forrest Bowers, 1:27:58; 3. Jim Ustasiewski, 1:30:31; 4. Tracy Rivera, 1:31:34; 5. Ryan Bischoff, 1:31:51; 6. Mark Neidhold, 1:37:00; and 7. Reed Stoops, 1:37:00.
According to race directors the pace started gradual, as riders got used to the grim reality of a cold-water wash. The field stayed together till the turn around, where hostilities commenced. The best new rider award went to Forrest
Bowers. Also Ryan Bischoff had an amazing ride, given he just bought his bike a couple of weeks ago.
The best sportsmanship award went to Tracy Rivera, who dropped back to help Bischoff. Neidhold and Stoops had tight battle to the finish. Jamie Bursell couldn’t do the ride due to a mechanical issue. Robert Sowers
made a brief appearance.
