The Gastineau Channel Little League Majors (11-12 year old) All Stars won their second straight game on Thursday over Anchorage's Dimond West Little League 3-1; taking a two games to zero lead in their best-of-five Alaska State Majors All Star Baseball Tournament championship series at Anchorage.
Juneau won a thriller that saw the capital city boys compile eight hits to Dimond West's seven. Erik Kelly got the win for Juneau, striking out five, walking one and allowing just two hits and no runs. Sammy McKnight started the game and kept DW to just one run in the third inning, while striking out one, walking three and allowing three hits.
Juneau came back in the bottom half to score two. Zeb Storie walked and advanced to third on a Michael Cesar single and stole home to score. Cesar would score on a Kelly line drive to center.
Juneau scored another run in the fifth inning. Cesar was hit by a pitch and stole second. The bases became loaded as Luke Mallinger drew a walk and Kelly was hit by a pitch. Jacob Dale singled to score Cesar.
McKnight threw 50 pitches with 29 strikes, Kelly threw 34 pitches with 22 strikes and Storie finished the action with 14 pitches, 13 of which found the strike zone.
Dale went 2-3 at the plate with 1 RBI; Kelly was 1-2, 1 RBI; Cesar 1-2 with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases; Storie 0-1 with 1 RS and 2 walks; Swofford was 1-2, Watts 1-1, Cox 1-3, McKnight 0-0, San Nicolas 1-1, Neville 0-2, and McCurley 0-1.
Juneau can wrap up the state championship with a win today (Friday) in game three at 4:30 p.m.
