A pitching duel between Dimond West and Juneau’s Bryce Swofford made a thriller of a final game at the 2012 Alaska State Majors All Star Baseball Tournament on Sunday and Juneau’s Gastineau Channel Little League got the biggest chill with a 4-1 win. The victory gave Juneau a three game sweep in the best-of-five series.
Dimond held Juneau to only 3 hits in 5 innings with only one run in the 4th coming off of Kasey Watts getting hit by a pitch. Then a stolen base, a sac by Erik Kelly to get Watts to third, and then Jacob Dale getting an RBI single to tie the game. In the top of the 6th Watts hit a single to right with one out, Corbin Neville was hit by a pitch, and Erik Kelly singled to score Watts. With two outs Luke Mallinger ripped a single to score Neville and Kelly. The other hits for Juneau were Zeb Storie, Donavin McCurley, and Jacob Dale as the offense leader going 2-3. Bryce Swofford pitched a complete game allowing only 2 hits and striking out 9 with one unearned run. Diamond put a scare in Juneau in the bottom of the 6th having runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. On a passed ball Juneau Catcher Michael Cesar raced to the back stop and threw the ball to Swofford to get the runner going home for the last out and winning the State Title. Juneau will now head to San Bernadino, California for the Western Regional Championships with a trip to Williamsport, PA. and the Little League World Series on the line.
