Alaska junior All Stars open Western Regionals with win

The Alaska State Champion Juneau Gastineau Channel Little League Junior All Stars opened the Western Regionals in Vancouver, Washington on Wednesday with an 8-7, come from behind win over Arizona. The game finished late so complete stats were unavailable.

Juneau Manager Joe Tompkins stated, “Everybody was hitting for us.”

Juneau trailed 7-6 heading into their final at bat in the bottom of the seventh.

Mo Bullock singled to reach base. Devon Williams bunted him to second. Alex Muir was then walked to load the bases and Bullock stole home to tie the score.

“It was a pretty mature game by our guys,” Tompkins said.

After Jake Tanner was walked to reload the bases, Grant Ainsworth hit a walk-off, game-winning single to end the night and move Juneau one step closer to a World Series berth.

Jared Markovich started on the mound for Juneau and threw 50 pitches, Tim Christensen relieved him and threw 20, Jake Tanner relieved for 47 pitches and Ainsworth threw the last 17 pitches.

The team next plays Utah tonight.

According to coaches the team was again applauded for being good sports and very competitive, a trait that has not gone unnoticed in the State of Alaska either.

Governor Sean Parnell stated in an email, “I had the pleasure of meeting many of these players, their families and their coaches on opening day. Not only are they skilled, but they clearly value sportsmanship and respect for their teammates and opponents.”
