The Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears and Thunder Mountain High School Falcons cross-country squads are teaming up in a fundraising race on Thursday that will support both programs.
“It is something we have done on and off over the years,” JDHS coach Merry Ellefson said. “I first did it in 1989 in Anchorage with my brother. To get to do it with Thunder Mountain makes it very special, for both teams. Plus it will be a lot of fun.”
The JDHS and TMHS will split their runners, pairing them with runners from each other’s programs, combining Crimson Bears and Falcons. The Treadwell Toilsome Twosome has a twist however.
The two-person teams run a 5K, or 3.2-miles, simultaneously and the best-combined times win. Not just the best combined from the Crimson Bears or Falcons either.
The public is invited to join in on the action.
Geezers, Klondike trainers, tri-athletes, coaches, non-runners, Mount Juneau Ridge runners, hikers, walkers, middle school runners, grade school sprinters, the Juneau Police Department and all city employees, all State and Federal workers, parents, and mom and pop teams are welcome to run on the same course our athletes will race in the Region V championship in September.
If you don’t have a teammate than non-partnered runners are encouraged to come as well and will be paired at the event. The teams are stressing that this is a run-as-you-choose race, meaning it is to be enjoyed.
There will be some who choose to go for the win.
“We are even challenging the Governor to come down,” one JDHS runner stated.
The best part, according to coaches, is that all skill levels get a benefit from entering the run.
“Our runners get to experience the hills of the course they will race on at the region championship,” TMHS coach Scott May said. “And it is a great team-building thing and a really great opportunity for our runners to interact with the community. In cross country we really all get along and support each other and we like to bring that out to the community.”
The Treadwell Toilsome Twosome will start at 6 p.m., Thursday, at Sandy Beach. Partners run a small distance and then run in opposite directions on the course. Prizes and awards for top male, female and mixed teams, plus age groups, will be given.
The event is a fundraiser race for the JDHS and TMHS cross-country teams. This is a pay-as-you-can event and there will be shirts, gear and apparel for sale from both the Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain high school teams. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
