Crimson Bears varsity men run at Palmer

JDHS senior Tal Norvell finishes the Palmer Invitational on Saturday.

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears boy’s varsity cross-country running team competed on the Mike Janecek Trails course at Palmer High School on Saturday.

According to coach Tristan Knutson-Lombardo the team finished in sixth place. West Valley continued to dominate the team running scene, placing their five scoring runners in the top 10 while Kodiak put the top two runners across the line first. The top three ran under16 minutes. Crimson Bears senior Tal Norvell finished fifth with a 16:28.

“It was really impressive to see the top guys running,” Norvell said. “The number one ran a 15:45, that really gives me something to shoot for. I am pretty proud of the team and our efforts. I think we will continue to push hard in our practices and improve. I can see those runners up a head of me still and will use that as a mental training tool to get up there and catch them. I think just keeping up the hard work is important. For our underclassmen, running for the first time in front of such a huge crowd, they were a little nervous but got a lot out of it. It was impressive to see them run so well. It is cool to be a senior now, after being in their shoes, and seeing how they are doing and to be able to share with them the things I have learned a long the ways.”

Sophomore Riley Moser took 12th in 16:31, senior Martin Woodby set a PR with 17:38 in 31st place, sophomore Johnny Elliot was 32nd in 17:50, freshman Corbin Mitchell 18:08, Brian Holst, and Ryan Moritz.

“The nice thing is we have a really young squad,” Knutson-Lombardo said. “And the freshmen are getting their feet wet now and seeing what a meet is like up north.”

Nine teams ran in the competition. Kenai High School sophomore Allie Ostrander set a course record for the women in 17:42. Times were not available from the race organizers by press time.
