Crimson Bears tennis team nets Anchorage

The Juneau Douglas High School Tennis Team played their first official matches of the season last weekend in Anchorage.

The Crimson Bears won their first match against Service High School on Friday, 6-4. In boys singles-1 Service’s Rayce Carey defeated JDHS sophomore Henry Prussing 6-1, 6-1. In boys singles-2 JDHS sophomore Macleod Morehouse defeated SHS’ Alecis Kionisla 8-4 in an 8 game pro set format. Macleod and Henry are in their 2nd season playing tennis. In girls singles-1 SHS’ Anna Kozyenkro defeated JDHS sophomore Catherine Walsh 6-2, 6-0. SHS’ Elsa Gillespie defeated sophomore Taylor Flannagan in girls singles-2. The JDHS boy’s doubles team of sophmore’s Jasper MacNaughton and Sam Bibb defeated Matthew Stene and Christian Morgan 6-4, 6-1. In boys doubles-2 JDHS junior Johnny Connolly and freshman Anton Rieselbach lost to SHS’ Gene Chung and Justin Park 7-5, 6-1. In girl’s doubles-1 JDHS seniors Pelle Arthur and Jade Pilcher easily defeated SHS’ Sarada Parsad and Rachel Juliepsen 6-1, 6-2. JDHS senior Kathe Tallmadge and sophmore Bailey Davenport defeated Fiona Bruce and Kelsey lindahl 7-5, 1-6, 10-8. The experienced JDHS mixed doubles team of senior Marc Heifetz and junior Emma Good defeated Jessica Piraino and Jaden Hodgson 2-6, 6-1, 10-6. Hodgson is a former Juneau resident and an experienced tennis player. In Mixed doubles-2 JDHS senior Sarah Landen and freshman Jon Scudder defeated Megan lillas and Nathan Rabona 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.

The Bears played a match on Friday evening against West valley High school from Fairbanks. The match was rained out and completed on Saturday.

West valley defeated Juneau-Douglas 7-1. The only win for Juneau-Douglas came from the boy’s doubles team of McNaughton and Bibb. In boy’s singles-1 JDHS’ Joe Greenough lost to Jared lees in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. JDHS’ Henry Prussing lost to Daniel Echeveri 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. In girls doubles-1 Davenport lost to Teresa Sample 6-1, 6-1 and Flannagan lost to Kelly Egan 6-0, 6-0. In Girls Doubles-1 WV’s Catherine Sample and Dana Raueust defeated JDHS’ Arthur and Pilcher 6-3, 6-2. In mixed doubles-1 WV’s Jeremy Weaver and Nettie Larson defeated Heifetz and Good 6-2, 7-5. The Wolfpack’s Weaver and Larson are one of the states best mixed doubles teams. In mixed doubles-2 WV’s Harrison Alford and Karen Jorgenson defeated Johnny Connolly 6-3, 6-0. JDHS’ Bibb and McNaughton defeated Josh Wells and David Schwaggert in a long match 5-7, 7-5, 10-6.

The Bears played Chugiak at 9am Saturday morning it was a close match, but the bears came out on top 7-5. Chugiak got their first win in boy’s singles when Max Haines defeated Bibb 6-3, 7-5. In boys singles-2 Scudder defeated Jackson Page 6-3, 6-2. The Crimson Bears got another win as first year player Joe Greenough defeated Mitchel Sayer 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 in boy’s singles-3. Pilcher defeated Maggie Wallace 6-1, 6-2 in girl’s singles-1. In girls singles-2 Walsh lost to Ripliegh Campbell 6-0, 6-2 and Flannagan lost to Izzy Larue in straight sets. The boy’s doubles team of Connolly and Prussing lost a close two-set match to Jacob Shercliffe and Josh Killer 6-4, 7-5. Arthur and Good cruised to an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory against Tasha boyer and Ashley Nugent in girl’s doubles. Davenport and Landen got an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory in girl’s doubles-2. Heifetz and Good slammed Nate House and Kelsey Metcalf 6-0, 6-0 in mixed doubles. McNaughton and Tallmadge won 6-3, 6-0 in mixed doubles-2.

Later in the day The Crimson Bears faced off against perhaps the best tennis team in the state of Alaska. The West High school eagles swept the bears 10-0. WHS’ Reed Kander defeated Connolly 6-0, 6-0; Alex Wong defeated Prussing 6-3, 6-4; Ava Kander defeated Arthur 6-0, 6-1; Ellen Silverman defeated Pilcher 6-3, 6-1; McNaughton and Bibb lost 6-1, 6-2; Reiselbach and Scudder lost 6-0, 6-2; Landen And Tallmadge lost 6-0, 6-0 in girl’s doubles-1; Good and Heifetz lost in two tiebreaker sets to Sahara McKee and Anton Clark.

Last-second win over Lathrop caps JDHS boys road trip

The Juneau-Douglas High School boys completed a three-game road trip with a 61-59 win over Lathrop Saturday, closing the Malemutes out in a free throw shooting contest to go undefeated on the weekend. Read more
