Local woman advances to rank of black belt

Laurinda Marcello is presented with her official black belt certificate by Sensei Nathan Young on behalf of Shihan Tanaka and the Kenwa Karate Association.

Juneau’s Laurinda Marcello has been promoted to the rank of Black Belt in Nihon Karate Do Kenwa Kai. Mrs. Marcello has been a long time student of the Shito-Ryu based discipline, one of the four styles of traditional Japanese karate, and actively teaches in the local Dojo according to the Juneau branch of the Kenwa Kai Karate Association.

Marcello attended the week long testing at the Kenwa Kai Karate Association’s USA Headquarters in Anchorage. Testing for and conferring the rank on her was the Association’s Vice President and International Director, Shihan Katsutaka Tanaka, an 8th Degree Black Belt.

“We are very proud of her accomplishment through her hard work and dedication,” Sensei Nathan Young of the Juneau Dojo said. “Laurinda is a great role model to our students and we are very pleased to have her on staff as an instructor. Laurinda and her husband Eric are great assets to our school and she has a natural ability to teach all ages.”

Kenwa Kai Juneau is a branch Dojo of the Kenwa Karate Association and is overseen by Shihan Tanaka and offers youth and family classes for ages 5 and up. The Dojo is located at the Pavitt Health and Fitness gym; more information is available at www.juneaukarate.com.
