Region V running championships

Thorne Bay High School's Taylee Nyquest is one of Southeast Alaska's top high school runners this season. See her and other area runners in the Region V Cross Country Running Championships at Sandy Beach on Saturday.

The Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) Region V Cross Country Running Championships will be on Saturday at Sandy Beach.

The Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears and Thunder Mountain High School Falcons will be battling with the Ketchikan High School Kings to secure the 4A boys and girls team titles (7 members each) and the right to advance to the state cross country running championships on Anchorage’s Bartlett High School Trails on September 29. Only one boys and girls team will advance along with any runner in the top 10 finishes who is not on the qualifying team. The Crimson Bears and Falcons will be lacing up their top seven team members for the boys and girls determined by performances over the course of the season in the hopes of capturing the Region V crown.

The 2A/3A schools will send the top three boys and girls’ teams (7 members each) and any runner in the top 15 not on the three qualifying teams. Teams from the 2A/3A ranks include Angoon, Craig, Gustavus, Haines, Hoonah, Hydaburg, Kake, Klawock, Metlakatla, Mt. Edgecumbe, Petersburg, Sitka, Skagway, Thorne Bay, Wrangell, and Yakutat.
