Local high school harriers tear up Ketchikan course

JD's Norvell top boy while Thorne Bays' Nyquest leads girls

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears boys and girls cross country teams took first place at the Ketchikan Invitational meet on Saturday, with Thunder Mountain finishing second on the male side and the Falcons girls finishing third.


Crimson Bears senior Tal Norvell and sophomore Riley Moser dominated the men’s race finishing first and second with 16:25 and 16:50, respectively, the only two times under 17 minutes.

Falcons junior Khalil English was edged at the finish line by third-place finisher Willie Brand, of Craig, 17:24 to 17:25.

Thorne Bay High School’s Taylee Nyquest continues to cross the finish line ahead of southeast competitors, winning in 19:10. The freshman Wolverine was just 26 seconds faster than TMHS Falcons sophomore Maddie Hall who ran a 19:36.

Petersburg’s Grace Weller was third in 20:33 and JDHS Crimson Bears senior Lily Pothier was fourth in 20:52.

The Crimson Bears won the girls title with 44 points, Ketchikan finished second with 83, TMHS third with 86, Mt. Edgecumbe 89, Petersburg 106, Haines 126 and Klawock 169.

JDHS used partner style running, as senior Eliza Walker place sixth with 21:02 and freshman Katline Barrows was eighth in 21:17. Sophomores Sinead Scholl and Alicia Norton were 19th/20th (23:09 and 23:11), freshman Maddie Handley took 32nd (23:44), Talia Andrews 38th (24:15) and freshman Nora Lynch 44th (25:08).

TMHS senior Marella Gungob was 15th (22:26), senior Katie Jones 26th (23:21), senior Emilyanne Lohrey 31st (23:39), junior Estie Dawson 42nd (24:44), freshman Dunya Hermann 52nd (25:34) and junior Rhys Coffee 55th (25:57).

The JDHS boys won the team title with 40 points; TMHS had 56, Ketchikan 111, Mt. Edgecumbe 120, Sitka 130, Haines 133, Craig 149, Klawock 247 and Petersburg 254.

Crimson Bears sophomore Johnny Elliot solidified the title chase with a fifth place time of 17:32, senior Martin Woodby was seventh in 17:35, freshman Corbin Mitchell 29th (18:42), freshman Brian Holst 36th (18:54), Tommy Thompson 40th (19:07), freshman Ryan Moritz 46th (19:17), sophomore Grant Ainsworth 58th (19:44), junior Malik Brown 65th (20:12), freshman James Cheng 68th (20:15), senior Carl Uchytil 73rd (20:29), freshman Noah Machakos 80th (21:03), freshman Duncan Smith 83rd (21:13), freshman Soren Thompson 88th (21:27), senior Ryan Harvey 107th (23:23) and freshman Jason Nichols 113th (24:40).

Other TMHS boys finishers included senior James Steeves ninth (17:45), senior Ben Travers 12th (17:59), junior Nicolas Wright 14th (18:07), senior Nick Bursell 19th (18:25), senior Stephen Ringle 22nd (18:30), sophomore Michael Lohrey 33rd (18:51), freshman Luke Padden 35th (18:53), sophomore Brendan Pietz 55th (19:40), freshman Obadiah Dawson 69th (20:15), junior Rafael Sales 71st (20:23), freshman Ben Garrett 76th (20:40), junior Bradley Peterson 81st (21:08), freshman Max Suzuki 86th (21:25) and sophomore Jamie Barnhill 118th (25:13).

Gustavus High School Foxes’ runner Kenny Marchbanks finished 52nd (19:28).

Roughly 120 boys and 69 girls competed in this final tune up race before Saturday’s Region V cross country running championships on Juneau’s Treadwell Mines Trails at Sandy Beach.
