Crimson Bears' Kaitlin Fagerstrom (11) and Maddie McKeown (14) put up a defense against Ketchikan on Friday at JDHS.

Crimson Bears’ Gracie Meiners and Chelsea Peterson put the hammer down on the visiting Ketchikan Kings Friday night, blasting down a combined 25 kills to help the Juneau-Douglas volleyball team sweep 25-23, 25-9 and 25-17.

“It is nice to have our hitters on,” Juneau-Douglas coach Lesslie Knight said. “We have one really really strong hitter, and then we have several strong hitters. So we can mix it up which will make us better in the long run, especially if any body shuts our main hitter down.”

A late night arrival by plane for the Kings plus a greeting at the airport by the Crimson Bears did affect the play of both squads as unforced errors and miss hits were plentiful on both sides.

The Crimson Bears began the match with a block but committed a net violation and the Kings gave possession right back on a net serve.

Peterson killed her first of 11 game one scores and Kayla Balovich controlled service to open a 6-1 advantage. That possession included another Peterson kill, a Maddie McKeown block and an ace serve.

Rachel Doogan served from point seven to 11 before Ketchikan’s Tylynn Ward made a saving tip for a score and served the Kings to eight points.

Peterson again stopped a tie at 14 with three straight kills for a 17-13 advantage before the Kings’ Gabi Bonck blocked a point and Shery Bongot aced a serve.

Two extended rallies gave the Crimson Bears a 22-20 lead, but both times they miss-hit to give the Kings life. Two JDHS errors allowed the Kings to close to 24-23 before McKeown killed a shot off a Ketchikan blocker for the first game win.

In game two Meiners ran off a string of four service points including two aces and a Doogan block to open a 4-0 lead. Balovich followed with five service points and two aces for a 9-2 lead. Tori Fogg served three times with a Meiners kill and Doogan block for a 12-3 advantage and Doogan served to 16 with Peterson and Meiners killing and Kaitlin Fagerstrom getting a double block.

At 17-4 Peterson served to 21 points with two aces and a Meiners kill. The Crimson Bears would win on a 25-9 tip shot by Peterson.

Ketchikan jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the final game before Peterson killed a point and Fogg served to take the lead.

After a service error, Peterson regained possession with a kill and Doogan served points seven to 16 with two aces and three Peterson Kills. The teams traded possessions down the stretch with Meiners killing the match winner at 25-17.

Peterson tallied 18 kills on Friday, Meiners seven kills and two aces, Balovich two kills and three aces, Doogan two aces and two blocks, McKeown three blocks and one kill, Fagerstrom two blocks. Doogan had 21 serves, Balovich 16, Fogg 12, Meiners nine, Peterson eight, and Paul 6. Defensively Peterson picked up 10 digs, Paul nine, Cora Bontrager and Meiners seven apiece, Balovich and Fogg six each, Doogan two and Brandi Hall one.

On Saturday the Crimson Bears won in three straight again, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-15.

Balovich led with seven aces, Peterson had three and Meiners two. Peterson led in kills with 15, Meiners added seven and Balovich three. Peterson also picked up 8 digs, Balovich and Bontrager four apiece.

“The girls played really well,” Knight said. “We were solid across the front.”

JDHS served 92 percent on Friday and close to 95 on Saturday. The Crimson Bears are 4-0 in conference play and next host the 3A Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves on Thursday at 6:15 (JV 4:30).
