Falcons' spikers play against state's best

Dimond defeated South in three sets at Saturday’s championship match of the West Spiketacular volleyball tournament, winning 16-25, 25-17, 15-7 at West High School in Anchorage. The Thunder Mountain Falcons posted an overall record of four wins and seven losses in the tournament.


According to the Anchorage Daily News, Dimond and South were the only teams to survive pool play without a loss, each finishing 8-0 and advancing to Saturday’s championship Gold bracket with Service and Palmer. Dimond and South swept Service and Palmer, respectively, to earn spots in the title match.

Soldotna (Silver bracket), Mt. Edgecumbe (Bronze bracket), Chugiak (Copper bracket) and Nome-Beltz (Nickel bracket) all won consolation titles.

The Thunder Mountain Falcons started “D” pool play with Service Nikiski, Colony, and West. In round robin play the Falcons finished with three wins and five losses. The Falcons beat Nikiski (5 wins 3 losses) 25-22, 25-13; lost to West (4-4) 25-15, 25-15; split with Service (5-3) 21-25, 25-23; and fell to Colony 4-4) 25-13, 25-19.

Dimond (8-0) topped the “A” pool with Bartlett (5-3), Kodiak (4-4), Barrow (3-5), and Wasilla (0-8).

South (8-0) topped the “B” pool with Soldotna (6-2), Eagle River (3-5), Skyview (2-6) and Nome-Beltz (1-7).

Palmer (6-2) topped the “C” pool with Grace Christian (6-2), Mt. Edgecumbe (5-3), Chugiak (4-4), East (3-5) and Homer (0-8).

After pool play teams were divided into single elimination brackets respective of records.

Thunder Mountain fell to Nome-Beltz in the semi-final of the Nickel Bracket 25-23, 25-20, and 15-12.

The Falcons next play at Ketchikan on Friday and Saturday.
