Homer Mariners football player suspended

14 Homer student athletes suspended

A starting Homer Mariners football player was among 14 Homer student athletes suspended for activities occuring at a teenage drinking party. The Mariners are scheduled to play the Thunder Mountain Falcons today. It is not known if other Mariners players have been suspended.

According to the Alaska Dispatch, the football player and his older brother were arrested Thursday on one count each of second-degree assault, a felony. In charging documents, Alaska State Troopers allege that two brothers, Anthony Resetarits, 20, and Joseph Resetarits, 18, sexually assaulted an extremely drunk boy at a teenage drinking party Sept. 8. Joseph Resetarits played this season for the Homer Mariners football team, but as of Thursday was removed from the team, said Homer High School Principal Allan Gee. Gee and Coach Cam Wyatt agreed to remove him, Gee said.

“We are working with district administration to determine the exclusion of any student involved not only from school activities, but our school campus,” Gee said.

The brothers were arrested without incident at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday in Anchorage and Homer, said trooper spokesperson Beth Ipsen.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Homer Court by Sgt. Jeremy Stone, on Sept. 10 troopers received a report from a South Peninsula Hospital nurse that a boy had been sexually assaulted at a large juvenile drinking party Sept. 8 and early Sept. 9 at an East End Road home. The boy arrived at the party about 10 p.m. Sept. 8 and eventually passed out on a couch in the living room.

Troopers allege that while the boy was passed out, multiple people wrote on the boy’s body with a marker. Stone wrote that Anthony Resetarits shaved an “M” into the boy’s hair. Anthony Resetarits then sexually assaulted the boy, Stone wrote, with Joseph Resetarits also participating.

Troopers recovered multiple photographs taken at the party, including one of two men sexually assaulting the boy, Stone wrote. The boy who took the photo identified the Resetarits brothers as the men in the photo, Stone wrote.

The party broke up after the incident and the unconscious boy was taken by friends to his mother. Community members began seeing the brutal sexual assualt in a film posted on YouTube and photos were also reportedly posted on Facebook.

Fourteen student athletes who were at the party were suspended for violating Alaska Student Activities Association rules for being at a party where alcohol was served.

Ipsen said the incident remains under investigation and further charges could be filed depending on where the investigation leads.

A parent meeting to discuss the assault was scheduled Thursday night. Resetarits was one of the Mariners starting offensive linemen and linebackers.
