Juneau-Douglas High School put two players on the 2012 All-Tournament team, the Thunder Mountain Falcons one, and although the Crimson Bears went into the final single elimination bracket play as the number one seed, they fell to the fourth seeded West Valley Wolfpack 25-17, 22-25, and 15-12 in their opening match and were eliminated.
“It was nice to have the out of town teams come in and play,” JDHS coach Lesslie Knight said. “We see Petersburg and Ketchikan during the season but it is always fun to have an Anchorage and Fairbanks team come down.”
All-Tournament selection Chelsea Peterson led the Crimson Bears with 37 attacks in the tournament loss and put down12 kills, had 28 passes, and seven serve attempts with three aces. All-Tournament selection Gracie Meiners had 11 attacks with two kills, three blocks, 14 service attempts with two aces and nine digs; Cora Bontrager led the Crimson Bears with 18 service attempts, three aces and seven digs; Kayla Balovich had 19 attacks with five kills and six services; Sally Paul had four digs, Rachel Doogan nine attacks, three digs, three kills and one block; Kaitlin Fagerstrom had two kills and one block; Maddie Mckeown one kill and one block; Tori Fogg and Amberli Fitka one dig; and Brandi Hall three blocks.
“We could have done better,” Knight said. “We played very well but what we noticed, and admired, with Eagle River and West Valley was that they really talked a lot and that caused their energy level to be much higher. Communication, energy and better movement
