The Thunder Mountain High School volleyball team finished their tour of Baranof Island with two matches against Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe. On Friday the Falcons beat Sitka 25-13 and 25-16. Claire White, Jenna Luhrs and Katrina Greenleif led with four kills. The Falcons followed that match with a loss to Mt. Edgecumbe 25-16, 25-13, and 25-11. Kendra Wittwer had three kills, and Darbee Hickok and Natalie Montez notched two aces.
On Saturday the Falcons fell to Mt. Edgecumbe 25-10, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19. Wittwer led with nine kills, Greenleif had seven kills, and Luhrs, Kylie Ibias, Makayla Pierce and Michelle Manning five Kills each. Hickok added three aces.
“The girls played real tough against Mt. Edgecumbe,” TMHS coach Adrianna Northcutt said. “They carried a lot of momentum into the match and were able to track their hitters really well.”
The Falcons had to follow the Mt. Edgecumbe match with another rematch against Sitka and fell 25-23, 25-22, 13-25, and 26-24. Wittwer and Pierce led with 11 kills, Manning added 10 Kills, Greenleif had six kills, Luhrs hit four kills, Ibias tallied seven aces, and Montez served six aces.
‘This is the best we have seen Sitka play,” Northcutt said. “We played smart and strong. To play Mt. Edgecumbe to four games and then come in and play Sitka four games is really tough. We kept our head in the matches and really played powerful volleyball.”
The Falcons junior varsity returns to Sitka this weekend while the varsity has the week off. The Falcons will use that time to host a four-on-four fundraising tournament.
