Juneau Skating Club figure skaters Laurie Balstad, Skylar Cooney, Ema Jessen, and Gabriella Sloan recently competed at the Northwest Pacific Regional Figure Skating Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Laurie Balstad competed at the Juvenile Girls level, Skylar Cooney competed at the Pre-Preliminary No Axel level in Group B, Ema Jesson competed at the Pre-Preliminary No Axel level in Group A, and Gabriella Sloan competed at the No Test level in Group C.
According to JSC Figure Skating Coordinator Pam Leary, Juneau was well represented by all skaters with Skylar and Ema earning medals for third and fourth place in their respective competition groups.
The Regional Championships are the first qualifying event leading to National, World, and Olympic competitions.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment as figure skating requires considerable dedication to training,” Leary stated. “And national testing often requires travel outside of Juneau.”
With Treadwell Arena closed during the summer, Juneau figure skaters must travel to attend summer training camps, testing sessions, and competitions. JSC figure skaters are currently developing show programs to be performed during the Holiday Show on December 9. On March 3 they will hold an Annual Basic Skills Competition and on April 27 is the Spring Show.
The Juneau Skating Club’s mission is to teach Juneau to skate. In addition to figure skating classes, JSC offers a Learn to Skate program for all ages, as well as a Hockey Skating Skills program. Session 2 classes begin November 12 and last until December 23. Session 3 classes begin January 7 and last until February 17 and Session 4 classes begin Feb. 25-April 7.
