Seawolves add redshirt McGill to men's hoops roster

Posted: October 15, 2012 - 11:04pm

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 15) – As the 2012-13 Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball season got under way with Monday’s first practice, UAA head coach Rusty Osborne announced an important addition for the following season, with guard Brian McGill joining the Seawolf roster.

McGill, a 6-2, 180-pound guard, comes to UAA as a transfer from Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Western Oregon, and will redshirt this season in accordance with NCAA rules.

The Clackamas, Ore., native played in every game for last year’s 18-10 WOU squad, averaging 4.2 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals in 17.9 minutes per contest. He shot 45 percent overall, including .455 from three-point range, and 80 percent at the charity stripe as a true freshman.

“We are very pleased that Brian chose to join our program,” said Osborne, who begins his ninth season as head coach this week. “He is sacrificing a lot by coming and paying his own way and having to sit out for a year. He had numerous opportunities to play right away and receive scholarships from successful programs, but he chose to be a Seawolf.”

As a prep star at Clackamas High School, McGill was the 2010-11 Three Rivers Conference Player of the Year after averaging 22.6 points his senior year. He also won MVP honors at the prestigious OACA all-star summer series.

“With a very successful freshman year and a redshirt season behind him, we expect Brian to make an immediate impact when he becomes eligible for the 2013-14 season,” Osborne added. “He is capable of playing all three wing positions, giving us a versatile weapon to add to our other returning players. Brian is very athletic, has a great feel for the game, and can shoot the ball very well.”

UAA plays in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Seawolves posted a 23-7 record last season, earning their second straight NCAA Tournament 2nd Round appearance and finishing No. 16 in the D-II top-25 poll.
