Crimson Bears spike Kodiak, fall to Dimond at state tournament

Posted: November 9, 2012 - 1:08am

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears showed determination in Thursday’s opening match against the Kodiak Bears in the ASAA 3A/4A State Volleyball Championships at Wasilla’s Curtis Menard Sports Center.

Falling behind two games to none by scores of 25-18, 25-18 it looked like the Crimson Bears’ trip north would end quickly.

Instead, JDHS won 25-11, 25-22 and 15-7 to move on to the late night match against Dimond High School, a 25-16, 25-21, 25-14 winner over Palmer.

“To go five games and to start in the hole and finish on top was a good thing,” JDHS coach Lesslie Knight said. “Once we came alive we were doing well.”

Key to the win was Player Of The Game selection junior Gracie Meiners who accounted for 12 kills.

“I think we just needed to get rid of the pre-game jitters and get that match out of our system,” Meiners said. “We started to communicate really well and did a lot better.”

The Dimond Lynx, last year’s state runnerup and with only one loss this season, put up a tough net against JDHS, winning in three games 25-17, 25-16, 25-21.

Meiners again had a power game as did Player Of The Game senior Chelsea Peterson. The duo accounted for 21 kills.

“We didn’t communicate as much as we did against Kodiak,” Meiners said. “Dimond is good. If we play them again we will do a lot better. They had a big block up, but it is more mental than physical. They have a reputation but we can play with them.”

Added Knight, “We stayed with them, we even got up a couple points. I felt that we made some unforced errors in the first two games, and they have some heavy hitters.”

Seniors Sally Paul and Rachel Doogan have been selected to the Good Sport team at the tournament. The Crimson Bears will play at 3 p.m. today against the winner of today’s morning match between West Valley and Soldotna, both are opponents JDHS has met this season and taken games from.

On the 3A side, defending state champion Mt. Edgecumbe stopped Nikiski 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-13 and topped Nome 25-15, 25-10, 25-5.
