Gold Medal Teams needed

Deadeyes have deadline of Nov.30
Kake's Mike Martin, Myron Martin and Kip Howard celebrate their championship "C" bracket win last year, the team's seventh straight title and ninth overall.

The Juneau Lions Club Board of Directors has approved the dates, location, and divisions in the 67th Annual 2013 Invitational Gold Medal Basketball Tournament and is now searching for those deadeye shooters and elbowing rebounders to entertain the crowds and win the trophies.

The tournament board is seeking and accepting Letters Of Interest from any and all basketball teams wanting to participate in the tournament, which will be held March 17-23, 2013, at the Juneau-Douglas High School gym.

Player divisions for the 67th tournament will be eight teams in the “B”, eight in the “C”, and six in the “Masters.” Tournament co-chairs for 2013 are Juneau Lions Club Vice Presidents Lion Edward Hotch, Lion Louise Kadinger and Lion Geny Del Rosario.

“The only thing new we are asking is that each team, when they receive an official invitation, have two people willing to help out during the tournament,” Juneau Lions Club president Steve Brandner said. “Such as watch the door, set up in the morning before the first set of games.” We are always a little short handed.”

The team volunteers could be spouses or anybody designated by the team.

Any team that wishes to be considered for playing in the “B” Division, “C” Division, or “Masters” Division is asked to send a letter or an email that states the Community they represent, Division they desire to play, Name of the team, and the name of one individual who will be the Team Point-of-Contact.

The Juneau Lions Club is asking for separate ‘Letters of Interest’ for each Team and Division.

All Letters of Interest must be received by November 30th so the Juneau Lions Club can review each Letter of Interest, have time to make team invitation selections and send Official Invitations by January 2nd.

“If a team does not provide somebody they will not receive the participation disbursement after the tournament,” Brandner said. “We usually refund some money to each participating team.”

Letters of Interest for participation in the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament should be sent to:

The Juneau Lions Club is also holding a Logo Design Contest for the 2013 Gold Medal Basketball Tournament. The selected logo will be used for the Booklet and Tournament Promotional items. Everyone, young and old, is invited to submit a recommendation that they believe best depicts the long-standing basketball tournament. For more information go to the Juneau Lions Club website at

“We are looking forward to having another good tournament,” Brandner said. “Same divisions and same number of teams and same excitement.”
