Barnum selected Crimson Bears hockey Player Of The Week

Juneau-Douglas High School freshman Chase Barnum stepped up big time during hockey action at Treadwell Arena last weekend.

The Crimson Bears’ 5-foot-7, 145-pound forward was called up to the varsity for the series against the Chugiak Mustangs and found a steady line to skate.

“He played a good, hard physical series,” JDHS coach Dave McKenna said. “He earned it for a good physical effort and that is what we needed most. He really stepped it up.”

Previous Player Of The Week, senior captain Kevin Zigarlick, passed the award on with his suggestion for honoring Barnum. Players who win the award, an antique pair of skates that represent old-time hockey, are instrumental in naming the next recipient.

Barnum battled through both games against a tough Chugiak team, mixing it up along the boards and taking some hits at center ice. Barnum’s play resulted in his also earning a sprained ankle during action on the final night.

The Crimson Bears next play on the road at West Valley (Nov. 28-29) and North Pole (Nov. 30-Dec. 1).
