The Juneau Adult Hockey Association’s Chiefs claimed the first of four tier group championships, defeating the Tigers 4-3 in the Tier C title match Wednesday at Treadwell Ice Arena.
The Chiefs trailed 2-0 in the contest.
Adam Sycks staked the Tigers to a quick 1-0 lead with 1 minute, 55 seconds expired in the regulation’s first period. Jason McAdoo made it 2-0 before Chiefs responded with two of their own on goals by Sean Howard and Sarah Lowell in the second period. The Tigers’ KC Odell scored to regain the lead as the period ended.
Lowell scored her second goal for the Chiefs 1:32 into the final stanza to even the nets.
Neither team scored in the overtime period and the game moved to a shootout by each side’s three best players. The Tigers’ Jeremy Lavender scored the first shot and was answered by the Chiefs’ Howard. Chiefs’ goaltender Jason Soza (23-26 saves) stopped the Tigers next attempt and Laine Durgin gave the Chiefs the lead. Soza stopped the next shot to clinch the game.
Tonight JAHA championships games begin at 7:45 with the Tier X title match between Thane and the Killer Whales; Tier 40 at 9 p.m. is team Yukon verse the winner of Thursday’s Hawks/Dupont game; and the Women’s title at 10:15 p.m. pits the Huskies against the Shamrocks.
