The wind threatened to blow down Treadwell Ice Arena on Friday night but the storm outside was nothing compared to the tornadoes on the inside ice as the Juneau Adult Hockey Association played final championship games. JAHA closed out its fall season by crowning three tier champions.
The Killer Whales claimed the Tier X championship by edging Thane, 3-2. Regulation time ended tied at 2-2 with goals scored by the Killer Whales’ Chris Budbill and Mason Morriss and Thane’s Rick Morris and Jon Barton. An overtime period produced near misses but no tallies, forcing a shootout. Budbill scored the game winner in the one-on-one action to give the Killer Whales the crown. Killer Whales’ goaltender Pete Sommers stopped 22 shots, while Thane Goaltender Thomas McKenzie stopped 42.
In Tier 40 action, Yukon’s goaltender Jason Soza dominated the net by stopping all 23 shots on goal in a 2-0 win over the Hawks. Yukon’s Dave Anderson and Ben Van Alen got the puck nestled safely past Hawks’ goalie KC Odell, who did stop 30 shots on the night.
The late night Women’s Tier game featured the Huskies taking the luck away from the Shamrocks, 3-1, for the championship. The Huskies got goals from Karen Blejuws, Sarah Lowell and Marsha Squires while goaltender Darryl Tseu stopped 22 shots. The Shamrocks received the lone score from Abby Cummings. Ken Arnoldt stopped 27 shots for the Shamrocks.
The JAHA winter season will begin next month.
