Weekend sports begins tonight

A wild week of sports tips off at various locations, and continues at others, as the winter sports season has brought some indoor action to the area.

Tipping off tonight, the Thunder Mountain High School boy’s basketball begin their 2012-13 season by hosting the Sitka Wolves at TMHS at 8 p.m., same time Saturday night.

The Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears hockey team hosts the Monroe Catholic Rams tonight at 8 p.m. on the Treadwell Arena ice and Saturday at 7 p.m.

High School Wrestling comes to Thunder Mountain today and Saturday for a tri-meet with the Falcons, Crimson Bears and Ketchikan. Friday times: 3 p.m. - JDHS Vs. KTN; 4:15 p.m. - TMHS Vs. JDHS; 5:30 p.m. - KTN Vs. TMHS. Saturday times: 10:30 a.m. - Mix & Match; 1:30 p.m. - TMHS Vs. KTN; 3 p.m. - KTN Vs. JDHS; 4:30 p.m. - JDHS Vs. TMHS. So basketball fans can come early and watch some wrestlers to get into the mood for some battling board action on the hard courts.

The high school junior varsity/C teams are hosting a basketball mini-tournament at JDHS starting today. Friday times 1-9 p.m.; Saturday times 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Teams from out of town include Angoon, and Sitka. No official score books will be kept.

Continuing today and through Saturday the up and coming hoopsters from the middle school ranks will reach a champion in the “Icebreaker Tournament” at Dzantik’i Heeni & Floyd Dryden. See a schedule online or in Thursday’s print. Teams from Southeast Alaska are attending. Games are at Floyd Dryden and Dzantik’i Heeni with the finals at DZ on Saturday.

On Saturday the Juneau Jumper Winter Show will be held from 7-8:30 p.m., at Glacier Valley Elementary School, located at 3400 Tongass Blvd. Admission is one canned food item for the SE Alaska Food Bank. A silent dessert and basket auction will also take place. One canned food item. Call 321-8987.

On Sunday locals can attend the Intro To Skate Class, 1-3 p.m., Marie Drake Gym. The public is invited to learn the basic quad-skating skills with our local roller derby team, the Juneau Rollergirls. The class will be held from 1-3 p.m. every Sunday at Marie Drake through Dec. 16. All you need is gear and a smile. Registration is $40 for the whole class. On the horizon is the popular Holiday Cup 2012, beginning Monday, Dec. 17 through Dec. 31, at the Dimond Park Field House. The 20th Annual Holiday Cup Soccer Tournament will be held from Dec. 17-31. There are six coed divisions: Elementary (age 9 minimum); Middle School; High School (2 divisions); Masters; and Classics. On Thursday Dec. 20, is the Cycle Alaska Adventure series, 5:30 p.m., “Vagabonds On Bikes In The Mountains Of France.”Anne Fuller and Mike Sakarias will give a lecture series on their approach to bike touring in France and show photos of some of the fascinating and beautiful places bicycles can take you in that bike friendly country. ORCA is seeking Ski and Snowboard volunteers for 2013 Winter season. Southeast Alaska Independent Living’s (SAIL) ORCA program is currently soliciting volunteers to help provide individuals who experience disabilities the opportunity to recreate in an inclusive, accessible environment. Volunteers are needed for the ski and snowboard season and ORCA will provide instruction and ski buddies for alpine and Nordic skiing, as well as snowboarding. Volunteers have the opportunity to earn free Eaglecrest lift tickets through their volunteer efforts. A “meet and greet” info night was held at the Rookery Cafe. Also, HoopTime basketball registration is taking place for players in grades 4-8. The 2013 HoopTime season begins January 5. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration deadline is December 15. Late registration may be accepted with an additional fee if there is space available.
