The week ahead in sports

Posted: December 9, 2012 - 1:21am

This coming week’s athletic endeavors begins today, or rather, resumes today as the Glacier Swim Club hosts the final day of the Southeast Age Group Swim Championships at Dimond Park Aquatics Center. This is a good day to spend in doors after an early morning ski or run and thaw out watching the swimming super stars you missed during the high school season and their younger teammates that are just getting started in the pools around Southeast Alaska. Meet records have already fallen in Friday and Saturday competitions so grab a coffee or a cocoa and watch the water boil at DPAC. Preliminaries 9 a.m.-11 a.m., finals 2 p.m.-until finish.

The Juneau Roller Girls are inviting the public to their Intro To Skate Class, 1-3 p.m., Marie Drake Gym. The public is invited to learn the basic quad-skating skills with our local roller derby team, the Juneau Rollergirls. The class will be held from 1-3 p.m. every Sunday at Marie Drake through Dec. 16. All you need is gear and a smile. Registration is $40 for the whole class. Sign up with Community Schools at 523-1552. Get more information at recruiter@juneaurollergirls.com. Children are welcome with adult supervision.

This coming Friday and Saturday is the season debut of two local high school basketball teams. At 6:15 p.m. the Thunder Mountain girls host the Sitka Wolves (JV 4:30) at TMHS and at 8 p.m. the Juneau-Douglas boys host the West Anchorage Eagles at JDHS.

Also on Saturday is the joyous Jingle Bell Triathlon, 9 a.m., at Dimond Park Aquatic Center. Event features a 400-yard swim, 10-mile bike (on ride-trainers inside), and 3-mile run (outside). In other sport news, the HoopTime basketball registration is taking place for players in grades 4-8. The 2013 HoopTime season begins January 5. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration deadline is December 15. Late registration may be accepted with an additional fee if there is space available. Don’t forget that ORCA is seeking Ski and Snowboard volunteers for 2013 Winter season. Southeast Alaska Independent Living’s (SAIL) ORCA program is currently soliciting volunteers to help provide individuals who experience disabilities the opportunity to recreate in an inclusive, accessible environment. Volunteers are needed for the ski and snowboard season and ORCA will provide instruction and ski buddies for alpine and Nordic skiing, as well as snowboarding. Volunteers have the opportunity to earn free Eaglecrest lift tickets through their volunteer efforts. A “meet and greet” info night was held at the Rookery Cafe.
