Minnesota's Turcotte hockey school teaching local pucksters

They won’t be jamming opponents into the hockey rink boards like Marty McSorley anytime soon, or blistering a shot past like Brett Hull, but the 50 or so youth skaters at Treadwell Ice Arena on Monday night will be going all “Wayne Gretzky” with the puck as they pass a few defenders.

The Turcotte Stickhandling Hockey School out of Minnesota is offering aspiring and current hockey kids, and adults, the chance to improve their hockey skills and have a wide range of ages and skills participating so far. This is the second camp within the year Hosted by the Juneau Douglas Ice Association, the first was the Rocky Mountain Hockey Camp offered last September which focused on hockey strategy, passing and shooting. The Turcotte camp provides kids between the ages of 5 and 18 with great stickhandling training and is noted as a specialized stickhandling and shooting school with professional and certified instruction.

“The kids get eight hours of quality on ice stick handling skills,” Juneau Douglas Ice Association President Arnold Liebelt said. “These instructors do a great job of teaching new skills while having fun with the kids.”

Turcotte is known around the US and Canada for teaching stickhandling for youth and adults. According to Liebelt, JDIA is able to provide this clinic at this reduced rate thanks to the CBJ Youth Activity Grant. This grant has helped finance several clinics at the rink that kids otherwise would not have had the opportunity to participate in.

“Having the clinic come to Juneau allows every hockey player in Juneau the opportunity to participate in this great clinic” Liebelt said.

There is still room available if skaters or hockey players want to take advantage of these quality instructors and valuable ice time. Cost is $210 for four days and eight hours of quality on ice instruction. The clinic runs from Monday through Thursday this week from 4:30-6:30 for 5-to-10 year olds, and from 7:00-9:00 for 11-to-18 year olds. If adults would like to participate, they can join in with the older group. Contact Arnold Liebelt for more information at 321-3505.
