Soccer fans will get some holiday cheering done tonight as the 20th Annual Holiday Cup Soccer Tournament begins at the Dimond Park Field House with Masters Division play from 5-9 p.m.
Defending Masters champion Crunch Enhancers (coach Phil Subeldia) is back and there is no sight of X-Factor, unless they changed their name, who were vanquished in that final. Coach Dylan Ashe will have Juneau Orcas ready to roll and Zach Dillon has the Dillon Team “pitchable.” Epic (Alex Newton), Honey Badgers (Weston Eiler), Galaxy (Charlie Ford), Candy Cane of Joy (Tyson Lee) and Jingle Balls (Cindy Eriksen) will be turf ready. Friday Masters play is from 6-10 p.m.
Defending champion Reindeer Rampage (coach Riley Paul) is back and looking for another Elementary title when their division play opens on Saturday. Mistletoes (Kristin Cashman), Gump Sickles (Ryan Hoover), Jingle Balls (Troy Choquette) and Lords a Leapin (Sam Adams) are in the mix.
Middles School, Junior, Seniors and Classics also open division play on Saturday.
A new team will wear the crown in the Middle School Division as Swaggalicious isn’t listed but Rowdy Rudolphs (Erik Norberg) and the Winter Kings (Andy Romanoff) are familiar names and Avalanche, who lost the Elementary title last year, has aged up a bracket. Thunder Rage (Lori Day), Quicksilver (Ben White) and Gleason are in the mix.
New crowns will adorn the Juniors as well. Last season’s Purple Corbras and Bad Santa are not listed. Instead the Wild Things (Susan Murray, Dan Landen), Gleason, Roaring Chestnuts (Valerie Williams) and Ice Kickles (Marty McKeown) will be on the pitch.
The Seniors will crown new champs also. Last year’s Wolfpac and Ice Devils are not listed. Gary Lehnhart’s Raptor House could be the favorite, but Dumbledones Army (John Newell) and Chill Dougy Island Brehs (Dan and Luc Rondeau) will be in a three-way fight to the finish.
A new champ will represent the Classics Division. Last season’s runner-up Ring-a-Ding-Ding (RADD) and coach Mike Goldstein won’t have the Hot Cocos to fear, just coach Marty McKeown’s Nutcrackers in the two-team division.
Games are two 25-minute halves. Three members of the opposite sex must be playing at all times, unless only the minimum number to start arrives (then a ratio must be adhered to). Elementary play is 8vs8, other divisions are 7vs7. Ties stand in the round robin portion. Overtime and/or shootouts are played in the single elimination tourney portion. See game schedule at left.
