Using a zone full court press for an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of play the Anchorage Christian Lions threatened to make a rout of the opening game of the 22nd Annual Capital City Classic.

The East T-Birds would press to rally twice, and five players from the two squads would foul out of the game in a physical 62-47 win for the Lions.

In short, it was a classic Capital City game.

“It was crazy,” ACS’ Dallas Dickerson said. “I like it. It is a tournament we want to come back to all ready. The team really played well.”

Dickerson scored a game high 20 points spread evenly over four quarters and East’s Taira Page had 14 the same way.

“We have been together for a long time and are used to playing against some tough competition,” Dickerson said. “We have a lot of role players and players who can step up. It is not what I can do, it is what my team can do. If anyone comes out on me I know I can dump it off.”

Both teams committed four turnovers in the 12-9 first quarter ACS lead and the two squads totaled 12 fouls. ACS zone pressed and East man-trapped as the game turned into a whistle-blowing day for the officials.

“It was our first game of the season,” ACS coach Darrin Powers said. “We had a lot of turnovers I didn’t like but we will work it out.”

East tied the score at the 6:03 mark of the second period when Page scored her sixth point in a row for the quarter.

ACS threw a length of the floor pass over the T-Bird press to regain the lead and East never got closer than two points again as the Lions took a 34-24 lead into halftime.

A charge foul against East turned the momentum of the game in favor of ACS as they went on a 12-0 run at the start of the third period to lead 45-29 into the final stanza.

“We can’t do anything but go forward from here,” East coach Rick Henderson said. “We came in flat and they took advantage of it. Short of not playing up to our expectations we had a few girls under the weather, but we beat ourselves and they had a hand in it.”

Samantha Busse added 10 points for the Lady Lions, Michelle Coderre nine, Sarah Geagel eight, Tanner Ealum seven, Madison Ealum four, A. Williams three, and R. Thimeaux one.

Togafiti Manu added 11 points for East, Jasmin Richards seven, Kaitlyn Miles four, Shanterria Gillion three, Vaasaumamao Pedro, Dajah Motuga and Felica Manu two each.

ACS hit 25-34 from the charity stripe, East was 16-33.

ACS will play JDHS, a 56-40 winner over Sitka, at 5 p.m. tonight. East faces Sitka at 1 p.m. today. Shooting contests are at 11 a.m. today.
