Crimson Bears split ice with Golden Bears

JDHS tops Bartlett 4-1, loses 5-4

Their long holiday lay off over, a rested Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears hockey team over powered Anchorage’s visiting Bartlett High School at Treadwell Arena, winning Friday 4-1, but fell to the Golden Bears on Saturday 5-4.

“We were a little out of sync,” JDHS coach Dave McKenna said. “We had a lot of days of practice with no games and now our schedule will be a little more friendly. We will be able to have a few days off between games now.”

The Crimson Bears (6-11-1) were physical in Friday’s win, compiling eight penalties to Bartlett’s one.

JDHS senior Marc Heifetz notched the first goal at the 13:20 mark in the first period on an assist by classmate Tod Baseden. The Crimson Bears made it 2-0 at the 9:32 mark of the second period on a Baseden goal (assist sophomore Dalton L’Allier).

Bartlett answered roughly two minutes later when Chance Aquino put in a point blank shot (assist Jason Marks).

JDHS put the game away with two goals in the final period. Freshman Chase Barnum hit at 11:57 (assists sophomore Cole Cheeseman, senior Matthew Campbell) and Baseden notched his second goal at 9:16 (assists seniors Dillon Tomaro and Kevin Zigarlick).

Penalties went to Cheeseman (roughing), Baseden (elbowing), Zigarlick (holding), sophomore Michael Dale (hooking), junior Ethan Seid (boarding), Tomaro (roughing) and sophomore Kaipo Tseu (head contact, slashing).

Colter Pritchard turned back 23 shots on goal for JDHS, and Justin Driskell 24 for Bartlett.

Friday Stars Of The Game went to JDHS’ Baseden and Barnum and Bartlett’s Aquino.

On Saturday the Crimson Bears scored two goal at the top of the first period.

Campbell at 12:24 (assist Heifetz) and Heifetz at 12:09 (Baseden, L’Allier assists).

The Golden Bears answered nine seconds later as Aquino scored unassisted.

JDHS took a 3-1 advantage at the 6:55 mark with a Tomaro score (assist Campbell) and again Bartlett answered with a score by Joel Johnson at the 4:55 mark (assists Aquino, Jason Marks).

Bartlett hit at the 7-minute mark of the second period as Mason Rafter (assist Johnson, Aquino) scored the first of his three goals in the game.

Logan Moser answered for the Crimson Bears at the 6:36 mark (Zach Easton) for a 4-3 JDHS lead.

JDHS looked to have the game until Bartlett’s Rafter found the net with successive shots in less than a minute, scoring unassisted at the 4:54 mark and again at the 4:15 point (Johnson).

Pritchard stopped 18 shots for the Crimson Bears and Justin Driskell turned away 34 for the Golden Bears.

JDHS penalties were Kevin Siglar (interference), Seid (slashing), Dale (roughing), Zigarlick (head contact), Tseu (interference), Baseden (spearing and game disqualification). Bartlett penalties included Rafter (elbowing, boarding), Aquino (roughing), Marks (head contact, tripping).

Stars Of The Game were Mason Rafter and Joel Johnson of Bartlett and JDHS’ Matthew Campbell.
