Kombi to start Juneau Ski Club race season

Lower Hilary's course awaits skiers

Posted: January 18, 2013 - 1:10am

With weather reports calling for a “chance” of snow and “snow likely” and “40” or “50” percent snow that could possible fall from clouds if the stars align, one thing is certain: the Juneau Ski Club is ready to bust a slalom move down the Eaglecrest slopes on Saturday.

“For sure we are ready,” Juneau Ski Club program director and junior coach Dan Ord said. “Our first day on snow was Dec. 1, we have been at it for a while.”

The Juneau Ski Club Kombi begins at 10:30 a.m. on Lower Hilary’s. Skiers will take a course inspection from 9:30-10 a.m. The race is United States Skis and Snowboard Association (USSA) sanctioned and open for any skier with a USSA membership.

The Kombi is a technical mixture of standard slalom and giant slalom turns that create a flowing, rhythmic and consistently changing course. The fastest combined time of two runs is awarded the winner. The event should finish by noon.

The JSC already attended one race in Anchorage. That event, the Coca-Cola Holiday Classic Alpine Ski Race at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, was modified as rain and high-wind warnings forced Friday giant slaloms and a Sunday slalom to be cancelled. Saturday featured two slaloms run in one day.

“So we got in a lot of great training runs,” Ord said.

Three JSC skiers attended the races.

Joe Greenough, a U18 (under 18) skier, finished 10th overall and 3rd in his age group. Normally Greenough would place higher but he had two bobbles that required excellent ski recovery to finish the run.

Allie Hiley, U18, is a technically strong skier who tactically always finishes a race. Hiley went out of her comfort zone in the first run, attacking the course more aggressively, and blew a ski yet still finished 9th in her age group. Her second run was fast and still technically strong enough in form to push her up the rankings.

Cody Weldon finished 9th overall and 4th in U16. Weldon also blew a ski in one race, which caused disqualification in that run, yet made up some of the time in the next race.

Skiers to watch on Saturday include Greenough, Hiley, and Weldon, Shane Kelly (Kelly and Weldon are looking to be top U16 state representatives), Ronan Davies, Jake Marnon, Colby Goldstein (U12), Lizzi Chapman (flies in for races from Pelican); Ronan Davies is a hot U14, Jake Marnon, Colby Goldstein is smoking the U12’s, Sally Thompson U12, and Quincy Bates U16, to name a few.

Other races include:

Napa Auto Parts Race Series will be held on February 1-3. This race series is a United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) sanctioned and scored event and is a qualifying race series for the U-16 state championships. The race series will consist of a Giant Slalom race, a Slalom race, and a Kombi event.

JSC March Technical Race Series will be held on February 16-17. This race series is sanctioned for U14-21 USSA registered athletes. Saturday’s Giant Slalom will combine speed with ever changing moderate turns through undulating terrain. Sundays Slalom will be a fast pace, short radius, and highly technical event.

JSC will be welcoming all Alaska U12-14 athletes to Eaglecrest Ski Area to compete in the Alaska State Championships March 30-31. This race series will consist of one Giant Slalom race and on Slalom race. This sanctioned USSA Race Series will determine the fastest U12 and U14 athletes in the State.

JSC Spring Race Series will be held on April 5-6. This race series is a fun year end JSC race. Saturday will be a dual Giant Slalom followed by a fun dress-up Slalom race on Sunday. At the end of this race series a combined point tally of the year’s races will award the Eaglecrest Cup to the fastest JSC male and female.
