Crimson Bears hockey team wins game, loses captain

Minor penalty causes major injury to JDHS captain Kevin Zigarlick

“It is not good.”

That was what Juneau-Douglas High School senior Kevin Zigarlick said after Friday’s 3-2 Crimson Bears win over the Hutchison Hawks at Treadwell Arena as he walked past fans post-game, his arm in a sling.

“It feels bad right now,” Zigarlick said. “I think it is a separation. Heading to the doctor right now. It is not good.”

The night started well for the senior captain and his classmates as they were honored along with their parents prior to the first period puck drop.

It started well for the Crimson Bears too, as they took a 1-0 lead with 5:28 left in the first period when Grant Ainsworth poked in a shot (assists senior Marc Heifetz, Ethan Seid).

At the 3:55 mark Dalton L’Allier ripped in a shot (assist senior Matthew Campbell) for a 2-0 lead.

Zigarlick dominated the defensive position, orchestrating the Crimson Bears as they stifled the Hawks attack. With senior Colter Pritchard stopping all three shots on goal in the period and Zigarlick clearing the puck, JDHS looked to be in top form.

With 31 seconds remaining in the period Zigarlick was taking a routine puck along the board when he was checked from behind.

The blow left him down for a second and when he arose he skated directly to the bench.

“I knew it was bad right away,” Zigarlick said.

Hutchison was called for boarding, the six combined penalty for both teams in the first period.

The Crimson Bears scored again at the 11:12 mark of the second period as Zach Hebert found the net (assists Kathryn Noreen, Campbell).

Hutchison answered with their first goal less than a minute later on a shot by JR Boots (assists Kevin Steffey, Brandon Rustad). Boots also scored the games last goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the final period.

JDHS senior Colter Pritchard stopped 23 shots and Hutchison’s Daniel Slane 10.

Crimson Bears’ penalties went to Dillon Tomaro (cross checking), Kevin Sigler (hooking), Cole Cheeseman (unsportsmanlike conduct, misconduct, roughing), Zach Hebert (unsportsmanlike conduct, too many men on the ice), Tod Baseden (head contact), L’Allier (roughing), Michael Dale (hooking).

Hutchison penalties went to Logan Tanner (elbow), Thomas Lees (rough, trip, head contact), JR Boots (boarding).

The Crimson Bears came back strong on Saturday, topping Hutchison 8-3.

Goals came in a string in the first period as Ainsworth scored at 6:31 (ast. Coleman), L’Allier at 4:35 (Seid), and L’Allier at 2:48 (Seid, Michael Dale). In the second period Heifetz scored at 13:20 (L’Allier, Baseden) and at 2:00 (Cheeseman). In the third period Campbell scored at 13:46 (Seid), Tseu at 8:45 (Dale) and Tomaro at: 58 (Baseden).

Hutchison scores: 10:16, first, Lemelin (Sands, Lees); 1:44 third, Boots; 1:28 third, Rustad (Edwards, Boots).

Colter Pritchard stopped 30 shots for JDHS, Slane stopped 15 for the Hawks. Hutchison had nine penalties while the JDHS was whistled eight times. Stars of the Game went to Hutchison’s Boots, and JDHS’ Heifetz and L’Allier.
